The Agile Alliance Board Nominations Committee has submitted a list of proposed candidates for consideration by Agile Alliance members. Votes are cast on this slate of candidates, as per the bylaws of Agile Alliance. Board members are unpaid volunteers and serve a three-year term.
These nominees will appear in an email ballot from associationsvoting.com, which will be sent to all Agile Alliance members. You may also vote at the election website (use the help function to request a resend of the unique identifier that was included in the email ballot). Voting will continue through Monday, September 23, 2024, at 11:59 pm PDT. Results will be shared at the Annual Agile Alliance Member meeting.
The member meeting will be held virtually on September 24, 2024. Agile Alliance will send members information regarding the time and instructions on how to join the meeting prior to the event. If you are not a member, you can become one here.
I have been in the technology business for over 20 years, starting as a software engineer and later on transition to product and business management. I also had project and program management responsibility for a good part of this journey. To me, the principles and practice of Agile as the bedrock of this professional journey. In addition, I was honored to join the Board of Directors of Agile Alliance in 2022, with my esteemed colleagues who volunteered to serve the Agile community.
My first exposure to Agile was from working at a company where Agile culture and DevOps processes reigned. That experience shaped my view of Agile till today. I believe Agile is about delivering results rather than specific methodologies or job titles. The transition taking place in the job market for Agile practitioners has created significant pressure on the community and Agile Alliance as a membership organization.
Our members are in need of an organization that brings them together and represents their interests more than ever. Agile Alliance has been successful for many years running the premier Agile conference for a global community. However, I feel we cannot simply continue it as a template going forward. Agile Alliance needs to serve the community in more ways and more in-depth than it has in the past.
I believe Agile is now “endemic” to the running of businesses, projects, and certainly in software development. That means some organizations no longer actively promote “Agile” as a separate practice. However, every job function and business can still benefit from applying the principles of Agile, as well as referring to the Agile Manifesto when seeking a better way to run a business or project. Agile Alliance can facilitate this meeting of minds.
If I am elected to my second term on the Board of Directors of Agile Alliance, I will work to create a secure future for Agile Alliance as an organization. I will also work to ensure Agile Alliance continues to represent the community and bring together the business, process, and technical functions in various industries to learn from, share, and build on the foundation of Agile practices today. We are all Agile practitioners regardless of job title!
I started my career as a professional athlete playing handball. In addition to playing in the European leagues, I also represented my home country of Austria at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
After my highly successful sporting career, I got my masters degree in Natural Language Processing and went on to a technical role working with Sony Ericsson. With a focus on sysadmin and telco, I honed an agile, team based approach to work as early as 2003, all whilst zooming around Copenhagen, Stockholm and Amsterdam.
My third career as an Agile Coach began after moving to New Zealand in 2007 when I co-founded Nomad8 and started working with companies to inject my own unique flavour and style of Agile.
I have coached and consulted to a range of impressive companies and my repertoire includes coaching technical teams, executive teams and whole organisations. In addition to every flavour of agile you can imagine I have coached teams and companies on things like Holocracy, high performance teams and Business Agility.
I have been a keynote speaker at some of the biggest Agile (and non-Agile!) conferences in the world. I have delivered the keynote address at Agile Montreal, Agile Brazil and Agile Australia. In 2015 I co-authored my first book ‘Creating Great Teams’ on the subject of high performing Agile teams and self-selection.
I had no idea that my first interactions with the Agile Alliance during the 2019 conference in Washington, DC, would eventually lead me to this moment—applying to serve on the Board of Directors during such a pivotal time for the organization. Agile Alliance has been instrumental in my professional development, providing me with a supportive network of peers who have consistently guided and supported me throughout my career. I truly am grateful to have this opportunity to give back to an organization that has given me so much. With over 15 years of experience in the tech industry, spanning roles at The Washington Post, Arc XP, NPR, and Capital One, I bring a unique blend of agile expertise, marketing acumen, and a passion for driving meaningful change.
I aim to drive action in these four areas, which I see as critical for Agile Alliance’s long-term success.
Financial Stability of the Agile Alliance
Through my work with Agile in Color, I successfully raised capital by cultivating relationships with organizations eager to partner with DEIB’s mission-focused initiatives. As a member of the Agile Alliance Board, I will leverage this experience in partnership development and relationship building to ensure our organization’s financial health, exploring new avenues for funding and collaboration that align with our mission.
Sharing the Value of the Alliance While Developing New Revenue Streams
My expertise extends beyond agile coaching and into the realms of marketing and sales, where I have led initiatives that align content with revenue generation. Notably, I spearheaded the launch of the Arc XP publication site, The Story and Scale, which can serve as a model for how we can share the value of the Agile Alliance. I am eager to bring this experience to bear in identifying and developing new revenue streams for the Agile Alliance.
Commitment to Diversity within the Agile Alliance Community
As one of the co-founders of Agile in Color, an Agile Alliance member initiative, I am particularly proud of the strides we have made in fostering a more inclusive and diverse community. This initiative has created spaces for underrepresented voices in the agile world, promoting diversity in thought and action. Today, the Agile in Color community has over 600 members who share personal stories, provide mentorship, and volunteer across the Agile community. This number continues to grow daily. My ongoing commitment is to ensure that our community continues to grow in its inclusivity, providing a platform where everyone feels empowered to contribute and lead.
Back to the Basics of Agility Through Collaboration and Difficult Conversations
As our community evolves, it is essential that we reconnect with the foundational principles of agility—collaboration, continuous learning, and sometimes having those difficult but necessary conversations about where we are today. However, I recognize that I cannot do this alone. The success of the Agile Alliance relies on the collective efforts of the other Board of Director members, our Managing Director, members, and even non-members of our community. I strongly encourage everyone to reach out to me with any concerns, ideas, or feedback related to the Alliance. I am here to serve as a conduit for your voice, ensuring that together, we continue to drive the Agile Alliance forward.
I am looking forward to the opportunity of serving on the Board and connecting with the Agile community in this new capacity. Together, we can shape the future of agility and continue to build a vibrant, inclusive, and impactful community.
