Agile methods are now mainstream in IT. After nearly two decades of widespread adoption, things are really getting exciting!
In the early days, we were happy just to get a few Agile teams going in the face of organizational cultures steeped in the Waterfall methods. Scrum took off, and many, many organizations got their Agile teams going. Agile teams deliver faster, with better value and higher customer satisfaction. Some teams wisely implemented hybrids, with eXtreme Programming (XP) and Scrum. Then, Kanban came along, and Agile methods spread to every nook and cranny in the world.
A few years ago, with the advent of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), Disciplined Agile Delivery (DAD), Large Scale Scrum (LeSS), and Nexus, we saw organizations aggregate their team delivery into programs and portfolios. Industry leaders such as Salesforce, Walmart, and Capital One have been able to accrue the benefits that have come with scaling Agile methods up. We have also seen the rise of Agile-savvy leaders in these organizations, and many of them are now in the ‘C’ suite.
